About Princess
Princess, the beautiful jersey cow, was born on a dairy farm where she was destined to be used for her milk; however, Princess is infertile, which actually saved her life.
No babies, no milk! Many people don't realise cows do not automatically produce milk and must be forcibly impregnated first. Like humans, they will carry their calves for nine months and have a strong maternal bond with them when they are born. Heartbreakingly, it is common practice for farmers to separate mother cows from their calves shortly after birth, which causes severe distress and sadness for the mother and baby.
Princess was brought to the retreat animal sanctuary nearly eight years ago, and since then she has helped raise nearly ten calves, including the adorable troublemakers Abbie, Panda, and Evie, giving them the nurturing and love they had tragically been denied from their biological mothers by the dairy industry.
As well as adoring her adopted calves, Princess loves nothing more than eating carrots and ginger biscuits, being groomed, rubbing her face on people's legs, and having a thorough back scratch!
Princess is currently enjoying her retirement at the retreat, living with the goats as the other cows are a bit too boisterous now that she's getting older. She's particularly friendly with Chip the goat, and they are often seen cuddling up together. She has also just taken on the role of loving aunt for the gorgeous baby calf, Rosa.
Princess loves cuddles and will purr when she's happy. Cows aren't so different from our beloved cats and dogs, and they share many personality traits and behaviours.
