About Panda
Panda came to the retreat as a baby calf and grew up with his adorable, adopted sisters, Evie and Abbie.
He is now nearly 4 years old! Sadly, not many male cows get to live to this age, as they are seen as a by-product of the dairy industry because they don't produce milk.
Heartbreakingly, male calves are taken from their mothers and killed at just days old or sold for veal. Thankfully, this isn’t Panda’s story, and he received lots of love when he arrived at the sanctuary that he sadly didn’t have the chance to receive from his mother. Typically, Panda’s mum would have had all her babies stolen from her so humans could take her milk, which would continue until her milk production slowed down at around age 3-5, and she would most likely be killed for low-grade beef. In the wild, a cow can live up to around 20 years old!
Panda is a gentle giant and very friendly; he’s truly one of the lucky ones and enjoys playing in the fields at the retreat with his friends. Sadly, not all cows are so lucky. One in five dairy cows across the U.K. are kept on zero-grazing farms, meaning they are imprisoned in sheds for their entire lives, never able to feel sunlight on their backs or grass under their hooves. Due to the cramped, dirty conditions, cows are given antibiotics to stop the spread of diseases, which of course end up in their milk too.
We wish every baby boy could be rescued like Panda was and have the same chance at life he now has, thanks to everyone involved at the retreat.
