About Gunther
I had never seen a pig smile until I visited The Retreat and saw genuinely happy (and adorable) pigs!
Gunther AKA ‘Nappy’ had sadly been neglected in his previous home and developed an infection in his joints that was never treated. This led to permanent deformities in his legs. Because of this, it would be too dangerous for him to join a larger group of pigs, as any injury to his legs could prove fatal.
Despite his ailments, Gunther can be seen smiling in his pen waiting not so patiently for his next ginger nut biscuit!
Sadly not every pig is smiling like Gunther, over 95% of pig meat in the UK comes from factory farms where pigs rarely see daylight. They are locked behind bars for most of their lives and the majority are killed in gas chambers.
Pigs for 'pork' are killed when they are babies around 6-7 months old. They can naturally live for up to 20 years!
Just like us, pigs feel empathy for one another and form very strong bonds with their babies and family members. Farming pigs in the way we do, strips away their right to fulfil any of their natural instincts, their right to be free, to express their personalities, to love each other in their close knit family groups and of course, ultimately to live at all.
Pigs are highly intelligent - even more intelligent than dogs! In fact, they are considered the 5th most intelligent animal in the world. Just like dogs, Pigs are incredibly playful and just like puppies, piglets will scamper, jump, hop, play-fight and run after each other when given the freedom to do so. Pigs also wag their tails when they're happy and are extremely tactile. They love nothing more than a back scratch and Gunther loves a good belly rub!
