About Herbert

Herbert came to the Retreat with his donkey, goats & pony pals. He is highly inquisitive and loves a fuss from visitors! If you scratch him the right way you may get a Herbert hug!

You can tell what mood male Turkey's like Herbert are in by the colour of their throat & head, blue means he's happy and red means he's mad!

Turkey's are very affectionate and establish lasting social bonds with each other; rather similar to dogs. They love to be stroked and petted. They also love music and will cluck along with songs.

Naturally a Turkey can live up to 15 years, but those bred on factory farms are killed between 10 and 24 weeks. During their unnaturally short lives they are crammed into filthy, soggy sheds, littered with their own faces where they never see the light of day and have very little space to move.

They are bred to be obese and grow twice as fast as they would in the wild, so farmers can maximise their profits. This is tough on their bodies and many suffer agonising leg disorders, broken bones and have heart disease because of this.

Turkeys are curious and playful animals, who explore their environments by pecking, digging and foraging. Sadly when farmed in this way they have their sensitive beaks sliced off, supposedly to stop them attacking each other as a result of the extreme boredom, frustration and distress that they experience whilst being raised in such poor conditions, deprived of their most basic welfare needs. In the wild, turkeys are not aggressive but on factory farms they are driven to aggression by the conditions in which they are kept.

This is the most common system, where up to 25,000 turkeys are kept in one shed, and is responsible for 90 per cent of turkey production in the UK.

To help go for a meat-free Christmas feast and choose a yummy plant based alternative.
